Snow Leopard in Kyrgyzstan: The Ghost of the Mountains

The snow leopard, known as “Ak Ilbirs” in Kyrgyzstan, is a national symbol and an iconic creature of Central Asia’s wildlife. This elusive feline inhabits the Tien Shan and Ala Too mountain ranges, where extreme climates and rugged landscapes make it a symbol of resilience and beauty.

Characteristics and Habitat

The snow leopard has a thick coat that allows it to blend into its snowy surroundings, and it is adapted to live at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. These regions, near Bishkek and other areas of Kyrgyzstan, have recorded breeding populations thanks to monitoring with camera traps. However, its habitat is threatened by climate change, which could reduce it by two-thirds by 2070.

Challenges and Conservation

The species faces risks from poaching and conflicts with local communities due to attacks on livestock. Projects such as “Vanishing Treasures” promote alternatives like ecotourism and beekeeping to alleviate these tensions and preserve its habitat. Additionally, international efforts aim to curb illegal wildlife trade and protect key areas where this vulnerable species lives.

The snow leopard is not only crucial for biodiversity, but its conservation also symbolizes the connection between nature and human communities. Protecting this feline is vital not only to prevent its extinction but also to maintain the ecosystems of Kyrgyzstan’s mountains.
