Horseback Riding in Winter in Kyrgyzstan: An Unforgettable Adventure in the Snow

Kyrgyzstan, a country of majestic mountains and vast landscapes, transforms into a true winter paradise during the colder months of the year. Imagine riding through snow-covered pastures, crossing frozen rivers, and ascending mountain passes that reveal breathtaking views. This unique experience connects you not only with nature in its purest form but also with Kyrgyzstan’s rich nomadic culture.

Horseback riding in winter is not just an activity; it’s an immersion into mountain life, where pastoral traditions remain intact and the crisp air fills your lungs. Here’s a three-day adventure that combines exploration, hospitality, and unforgettable landscapes.

3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: From Kyzart to Kilemche

Your journey begins in the charming village of Kyzart. Here, our team will warmly welcome you with a traditional lunch in a local house.

After recharging, embark on a 3-4 hour horseback ride to Kilemche pasture. Along the way, you’ll be amazed by the snow-covered landscapes, frozen streams, and winter shepherd houses. By the end of the day, you’ll arrive at a local mountain home, where you’ll meet a shepherd family and enjoy a comforting hot tea or kymyz (fermented mare’s milk) while sharing stories by the fireplace.

Day 2: From Kilemche to Son-Kul Lake

After a homemade breakfast, you’ll continue your journey on horseback to Son-Kul Lake, crossing the spectacular Tuz-Ashuu pass at 3,400 meters above sea level. At the summit, you’ll be greeted by an awe-inspiring view of the lake, surrounded by snow-covered mountains.

After a short walk, you’ll reach a cozy yurt camp where you’ll spend the night. Enjoy a traditional lunch in a warm yurt and take some free time to explore the lakeshore or engage with the locals. Optional activities include winter games and horse-drawn sleigh rides. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and marvel at the starry sky like never before. You’ll sleep in a warm yurt, wrapped in wool blankets.

Day 3: From Son-Kul to Kyzart

On your final day, ride back to the village of Kyzart, passing through the Uzbek Pass (3,200 meters). As you descend, soak in the last views of the snow-capped mountains and valleys. Once in Kyzart, enjoy a final lunch marking the end of this unique experience, before continuing your winter journey.
