Kol Tor lake: In the heart of Ala Too

Kol-Tor Lake is notable for its unusual turquoise color. A particularly beautiful combination of colors can be seen in these places in summer. Kol-Tor remains frozen most of the year, and in summer its water does not warm up above 5 degrees Celsius. This lake is of landslide origin and has no direct flow. But, going underground, it flows out a few kilometers below, forming a small mountain river.

The length of the hiking route to the lake is 8 kilometers one way. It is very picturesque: a relatively treeless area at the beginning of the path, wooded slopes in the middle of the route and real high-mountain alpine meadows at the end. There are many places for rest stops and picnics with wonderful scenery along the route.

A zone of moraines and glaciers begins three kilometers above the lake. Through the passes near Kol-Tor it is possible to get to Kegety Gorge. But it is important to know that these routes are quite difficult, and therefore only experienced tourists are recommended to take them.
