Sary Chelek is located in the Jalal-Abad region of western Kyrgyzstan, hidden in the western Tien Shan Mountains at the foot of the Chatkal Range.
This amazing alpine lake is the highlight of a larger area called Sary Chelek Nature Reserve, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978.
One of the unique natural beauties of the Jalal-Abad region – and of the whole Kyrgyzstan – is the Chychkan Gorge. This long and spectacular gorge, crossed by the Chychkan River, is located at kilometer 240 of the Bishkek-Osh road, just after the Ala-Bel pass, at 2,200 meters. It is close to the huge Toktogul reservoir.
In ancient times, walnuts from this area were transported along the Great Silk Road, reaching many corners of the world. These walnut trees can live up to three thousand years and reach 30 meters. The walnut trees grow on mountain slopes and along river banks at an altitude ranging from 1000 to 1800 meters. Arslanbob itself is at 1700 meters.
